Aaron Lufkin Dennison (don't you just love those names!!) was a member of the Swedenborgian religious sect who was born in the Boston area and who was instrumental in setting up or running such famous American watch companies as Howard, Waltham and the American Watch company. Despite his successes he was a terrible businessman and either bankrupted or was forced out of all the companies.
He retreated to Birmingham, England in the late 1860s and after several false starts founded the Dennison Watch Case company in 1874 and it proved to be his lasting legacy for the company almost made its century; finally closing its doors in 1967. During its heyday (1890 to 1950) the company made cases for about every pocket and wrist watch company trading in the UK, although Omega and Rolex seem to be the most common in WWs. They made cases in gunmetal, nickle, steel, silver and gold and in 1895 introduced gold filled cases to Britain. These came in 3 qualities 'Star'; which was guaranteed for 10 years and had an outer skin of 9k gold just 0.036mm thick; 'Crescent moon' which was made from 0.072mm 10k gold and guaranteed for 20 years and 'Sun, Moon & Star' cases which were made of 14k gold of the same thickness and were warranted for 25 years. I hope this has been of some help and if you need more info, please ask. As far as I know the only way to find out anything about the worth of a timepiece (besides checking on eBay, a major resource for price discovery) is to consult the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, NAWCC.org. They have two tiers of message boards: the first is free, and covers all aspects of clock and watch collecting (including clock repair, which is what I do) but does not accept inquiries involving monetary value. The second tier is supposed to host discussions on monetary worth, but I think you have to be an NAWCC member to participate.
I'd recommend such a membership if you are indeed a watch or clock collector. I'm not: I just fix the things.
