Was the dealer a Viking dealer? I found this blog post where someone explores the interior of their machine (with pictures). It seems like he was able to get to the circuit board that has the power supply part. He also said that he can access the transformer through the bottom of the machine, and that the owner before him seemed to have done so because there were some screws missing when he checked: Now on finding a transformer part, I don't know if that's available. I couldn't find anything about it through Google or where I buy parts for myself.
A Viking dealer would have more resources. For a replacement sewing machine, what is she looking for (embroidery, quilting, etc) and her price range? I don't have a Viking, but from what I read they are very specific in operation. People who love and are comfortable with Vikings tend to not like other brands because it's a different feel to the machine. I'd recommend she go to a couple dealers and ask to test drive some of their machines. My guess, since she loved her Viking is that she'll prefer another Viking machine. Only way to know for sure is to try some brands out!
Get some quotes. Getting a new sewing machine is an exciting adventure.:) • • • • •. I know nothing about viking sewing machines, but based on the link posted, the 'transformer' looks like it a switching power supply - I can't see the other side so it may also drive the main motor - in which case most likely a generic 'electronics repair shop' (aka VCR/stereo repair) could service it. Power supplies like this usually die from blown capacitors or melted transistors - which are stock parts. It could also be a conventional 'chunk of iron' transformer and depending on the level of customization these can be replaced off the shelf or if it's not a stock part, an electric motor repair shop can rewind them with new copper for a fairly moderate fee. Heck, if you can't get it fixed and it's headed to the trash, PM me and I'll pay you to ship it to me and give it a new life.
